NFBC Adopt a Highway Information

What's it all about?....

Do you  agree with a recent letter writer to the Times-Union who complains  that there is so much trash lining our streets and roadways, so much trash that never seems to get picked up in spite of the taxes we pay, so much trash that Jacksonville could qualify for the title of Trashiest City, so much trash and it seems no one is doing anything about it, and you think someone should do something about it?

Well, cheer up, your bike club, along with your help, is going to do something about it. Starting in October, the NFBC will participate in the FDOT Adopt A Hwy program. The Club has adopted a 2 mile stretch of US Hwy 17 on Fleming Island. We pick up trash 4 times a year and they put our name on a sign for all to see what good citizens we are. The Trash A Thons will be coordinated with a club ride and volunteers can earn miles and "Double Points" for helping out.

Pick up dates will be announced in the Wheelspeak, via email, and on this page, so be sure to bookmark it!

The details of the program are essentially as follows:

We have entered into an agreement with the FDOT to participate in the Adopt-A-Hwy program. Agreement is effective now and runs for 2 years.

Our area of responsibility  is along US Hwy 17 in Clay County, from Fleming St., just North of Black Creek, extending Northward for 2 miles on both sides of the road. SEE MAP

We are required to perform a trash pick up 4 times a year.  Sat, 14 Oct has been scheduled for the kick off of the program. Following dates, yet to be determined, but will be some Saturday in January, April, & June.

Pick up dates will be announced in the Wheelspeak, via email, and on this page

Assembly for the pickup and safety briefing will be at Lakeshore Cycle & Fitness on Park Ave, Orange Park.

Volunteer for the program by sending Jim Hedges an e-mail below.  Volunteers will have their names posted on this page.

Participants will be awarded 30 miles and double points.

If you own  club T-shirt or jersey, please wear it the day of the clean-up.

Volunteer!
