Traffic Skills 101, one day course, August 28th

Cycling is inherently safe. Based on crash data in “Freedom from Fear,” http://www.floridabicycle.org/freedomfromfear.html  by expert vehicular cyclist Mighk Wilson, for comparable time periods of activity, travel by bicycle is 2.1 times safer than by auto, even including wrong-way cyclists and unlighted nighttime (Ninja) riders. Airlines are 3.1 times safer. A vehicular cyclist in the daytime, obeying all traffic laws is 47 times safer. Road cyclists with solid basics fall somewhere in between 2.1 and 47. Improve your odds by registering for this Florida Bicycle Association First Coast Chapter event through the following link. www.FBAfirstcoast.org. Or email jeff@FBAfirstcoast.org.

The link to it can be found by hovering over the Map link in the menu to the left, or in the top right hand corner of the Maps page. Access the map, and click on the location in the list to the left and the map centers on that location. You can then enter your address and get directions to the ride start.

Event StartTitleDescription
8/1/2010 8:00 AM Place: Veteran's Park on Veteran's Parkway
Mileage: 27 to 47 miles

27-47 miles.  Ride starts at Veterans Park on Veterans Parkway, which is off Race Track Road.  Park in the back by the basketball courts and pavilions.  This club favorite ride goes along some of the newest paved avenues of northwest St. Johns County, most with bicycle lanes and little vehicular traffic.  While most of the ride will be an A/B ride, there usually are several C and S riders.  The ride is always within easy reach of civilization, so help is never too far at any time.  Bring a snack and a beverage and plan on staying after the ride to socialize with your fellow riders.  Contact John McDowell at RideDirector@nfbc.us  for more info.

8/8/2010 8:00 AM Place: Jacksonville Zoo parking lot 370 Zoo Pkwy (Heckscher Dr.)
Mileage: 70 or 102 miles

This 70/102 mile ride starts in the parking lot at the Jacksonville Zoo.  We then head north on Busch Drive then north on Main St. Once we leave the Kangaroo in Yulee the centurions go north on 17 then west on SR200/SRA1A to add the middle-of-nowhere loop from the TDF (an additional 32 miles), and the rest turn right on Harts Rd, proceeding to Haddock and Miner. A right turn onto 200 then another right onto Amelia Concourse takes us to Nassauville Rd. where we work our way to Amelia Parkway.  We then head south on A1A which eventually turns into Heckscher Dr. We follow Heckscher Dr. to New Berlin Rd. just before 9A and take a right - this is the detour to get around construction on Heckscher. The detour takes us over to Main St. then south on Busch Dr. back to the zoo.  The century option will be available if someone is willing to lead the route.  Bring a snack and a beverage and plan on staying after the ride to socialize with your fellow riders.  Maps are located on the web site under Rides, Maps.  Contact John McDowell at RideDirector@nfbc.us  for additional info.
