NFBC Club Rides

The North Florida Bicycle Club rides are open to everyone and best of all they are free!  Most rides leave promptly so arrive a little early.  PLEASE WEAR A HELMET and ride responsibly.  Inform others in your group of your intentions and don’t do anything suddenly.  This will help limit casualties requiring emergency aid from the local fire department.  A, B, C and S designators indicate the intensity of the rides and suggest an average speed the group will maintain.

Ride Ratings:
A = 18-21 MPH
B = 14-17 MPH
C = up to 14 MPH
S = Social Ride.  The emphasis is on the social side of the club, so the speed will be that of the slowest rider in the group.  Generally following a social ride there are refreshments and food to continue the event.

Rides often split off into many rates of speed.  OPEN - if there is no ride designation (A, B, etc.) the ride is LEADERLESS and will most likely be dominated by A to A+ riders.  B riders should bring a friend.

People interested in leading a ride or creating a ride should contact Jeanne Hargrave at (904) 264-7168 or Larry Clark at 904-710-1245.  Some regular Sunday riders to call if you can’t reach Jeanne or Larry are:  Sarah Succa (292-9945).

NOTES FOR SPRING/SUMMER RIDES:  The winter 9:00 AM start time on Sunday rides has reverted to 8:00 for the spring and summer.

PAY ATTENTION!!! Not every ride starts at 8:00 AM anymore. We have some early, and some later, start times on this schedule. There’s also a Saturday ride and a holiday ride. READ CAREFULLY.

38 or 49 miles.  Named for Ride Director Emeritus Arun Tahiliani, this ride explores the various areas of Jacksonville’s Southside. The ride starts in the Target parking lot on Beach and Hodges.  We will park by Panera (located at the Northeast end of the parking lot: best to enter the parking lot from Beach Blvd, Panera will be on your left).  A large portion (almost 95%) of the ride is on urban bike lanes.  Although traffic is light on Sunday mornings, you need to be comfortable riding in a bike lane on major roads beside traffic.  There are some critical points in the ride that require extra caution (Hodges and Beach, Atlantic Ave, JTB and Gate); these will be pointed out in red on the map.  Roads travelled include Hodges, Beach, Cortez, a short stretch on Atlantic, St. Johns Bluff Rd, Town Center, Touchton, Belfort, Gate, Baymeadows, UNF and Kernan along with some smaller roads.   The ride takes advantage of many of the bike lanes that were built as part of the Better Jacksonville Plan.  Most of the surfaces are very smooth and traffic has been courteous for the most part on past rides as long as we stick to the bike lanes.  There are some left turns, but these are at traffic lights.  Total distance is 38 or 49 miles.  You are welcome to cut out loops if you know your way around Southside.  Be sure to bring a chair, snacks and a beverage for an impromptu picnic afterwards.  (You can always run into Target if you prefer).

Place: Jacksonville to Baldwin Rails to Trails at Imeson, Westside

Distance: 38, 75, or 100 miles

Usher in the spring riding season with Clyde Riggs' semiannual classic 100 mile (or less) ride from the Jacksonville Baldwin Rail Trail to the Okeefenokee swamp. The 100 mile ride starts at the Imeson end of the rail trail at 8 am and heads to Bryceville, arriving at the Bryceville Community Park at about 8:50 am. The park is located next to the fire station at the junction of US301 and CR119 (7280 Motes Road). For those wishing to do a 75 mile ride, park here and join the century group, which will leave the park at 9 am. The ride arrives at St George in Georgia at about 10:00 am and stops at the gas station on the corner of GA Rte 94 and GA Rte 121. Those wishing to do a 38 mile ride should park here and plan to join the main group, which will leave at about 10:10 am. Straight up north from here to the Okeefenokee for a sandwich (you can preorder through Clyde) and backtrack the same way. Great quiet routes make for great pace lines or ride on your own at your own pace. Remember to bring money for lunch and a dollar for entrance into the park.  For more information, contact Clyde Riggs at clcar@comcast.net or John McDowell at RideDirector@nfbc.us. Winn Dixie Shopping Center, 1545 County Road 220, Eagle Harbor, FL.  38 to 53 miles

Come ride with the NFBC as we explore urban and rural areas of Clay County.  From Eagle Harbor to Middleburg, you will experience a variety of scenery typical of this growing county.  You will experience some grades along SR 21, SR 16 and some roller coaster rides along Thunder Road.  Then we will visit the scenic and historic Green Cove Springs where we will see the actual spring that gave the town its name.  Back to Fleming Island and the start where we will share snacks, beverages and camaraderie.  Contact John McDowell at RideDirector@nfbc.us  for more info.

4/4/2010 8:00 AM

Easter Sunday: 27-47 miles.  Ride starts at Veterans Park on Veterans Parkway, which is off Race Track Road.  Park in the back by the basketball courts and pavilions.  This club favorite ride goes along some of the newest paved avenues of northwest St. Johns County, most with bicycle lanes and little vehicular traffic.  While most of the ride will be an A/B ride, there usually are several C and S riders.  The ride is always within easy reach of civilization, so help is never too far at any time.  Bring a snack and a beverage and plan on staying after the ride to socialize with your fellow riders.  Contact John McDowell at RideDirector@nfbc.us  for more info.

Wear your Easter bonnet and join us for an enjoyable ride.  In the past, we have seen a 6' 4" tall bunny rabbit (was Harvey his name?)
