Becoming a Ride Leader

Ride Leaders are the heart and soul of our club ride program. Our many Ride Leaders keep our ride calendar filled throughout the year with fun and safe rides. If you have an idea for a new ride, are interested in helping others ride or need an excuse to tell your spouse so you can cycle more, you are invited to join the ranks.

What are the requirements to be a Ride Leader?

  • You need to feel comfortable riding your bicycle on streets and bike paths.
  • You need to be able to instruct a rider on how to fix a flat tire (You don’t have to actually get your hands dirty doing it)
  • You need to have good judgement
  • You need to support the club’s rules and policies.
  • When you lead a ride, you need to be able to prioritize the welfare of your riders ahead your own cycling goals. (Which means you might end up riding sweep with the slowest rider instead of leading the group across the county line).

What is not required to be a Ride Leader?

  • You do not need to be fast.
  • You do not need to be able to ride far. (We have some rides that are only 20 miles).
  • You do not need to be a bicycle mechanic.
  • You do not need a lot of time. (Because we also need Back-Up Ride Leaders and Deputy Ride Leaders).
  • You do not need a bicycle. (Yes, you do need a bicycle).
  • You do not need to be a long time club member (We have some Ride Leaders who started within a month of joining the club).

If you have any questions about the meeting or being a Ride Leader, please feel free to contact Nick Tallyn at ridedirector@nfbc.us.
